Duration

Project summary

The project is supporting the Costa Rican Government in achieving its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2021. Joint efforts are being undertaken to further develop tools and build up the necessary expertise. The project is promoting the long-term low-carbon development of the country in all aspects of lifestyle and the economy. The focus is on further developing national laws and institutional processes, as well as a functioning monitoring system. The project will also pilot incentive schemes to promote climate-friendly business practices, while at the same time elaborating additional financing options for climate change mitigation measures.

It builds on the work of a predecessor project. Significant progress has been achieved since 2009, for example in establishing functioning government institutions and in developing effective climate change mitigation measures (e.g. NAMA proposals in the coffee and transport sector).
